Late reply I know, but I loved Doom 3. It didn't even come close to the originals of course, but it was a great run-through up to the Hell scene. I loved how you had to check in corners with your flashlight (as opposed to most wimps that need it on a gun) and the fact that as you got closer to Ground Zero (Delta Labs), things got more and more fucked up. After the really disappointing Hell scene, (seriously, classic Doom is STILL scarier in it's messed up Hell stuff, especially in Doom 64/Absolution. I prefer F.E.A.R. for that kind of stuff, or Silent Hill 2) I lost interest (although still beat it.) The multiplayer sucked too, that's a given.
That said, even if you don't care for the idea of a new Doom game, the Engine should be spectacular. Maybe we can stop covering everything up with lots of blurry and bright splotches? (I like bloom/blur, but games these days overdo it. Life isn't that blurry!) I had a lot of fun messing around with the Doom 3 engine, with pre-hand knowledge from working with the Quake 3 engine etc... was pretty fun.
