[g2.1.pre-1983]Very low FPS when console open

While this wouldn't ordinarily be a big deal, it causes screen wipe transitions when using the "map" command to be very slow, taking up to 6 seconds! Upon start I find that with it open the FPS drops to 10. This includes the fullscreen console if opening the console while in the main menu.

Most strangely, the performance in the console gets better and better the longer GZDoom has been open. After about 5 minutes, it eventually reaches about 35fps when the console is open.

My specs are a Phenom II x4 and a GTX 970, so I imagine it's not a hardware issue. ZDoom does not have the issue.

I remember this has been happening for a while, but it seems to get woese and worse. Currently it is happening on g2.1.pre-1983-G0C8A817.

It also occurs in the recent 1.8 builds, but the FPS is much much lower in that case, starting as low as 7.

1) No mods, happens with any IWAD, even with a fresh config file
2) Nvidia 361.43, though it also happened on my old video card, a GTX 260, and much older drivers
3) Windows 10 x64, though it also happened on Windows 8.1 x64

I also noticed that the effect depends on resolution, e.g. if I switch to 640x480 it's smooth as butter, but on 1080p and up it's noticeably slower

Can you add "+logfile glinfo.txt" to your startup and then post the contents of said file?

This one's very odd. As it doesn't happen to me with a Geforce 550Ti, I'm at a loss what happens here. Are you certain you are not running anything in the background that somehow blocks OpenGL performance?

Not that I can think of.

I tried a partition with a fresh Windows install and it still happens there.

I also tried it on my Win10 laptop with an i7 third gen/HD3000 internal graphics and it has the same issue, though far less pronounced (the wipe animation only takes about twice as long instead of 5-8x as long, with it taking a bit longer with -gl3 enabled). On any machine there is no issue when using software mode or ZDoom, just with the GL modes.

It has the same behavior though where after a few minutes it becomes fine and has proper speed. I wonder if it has to do with memory allocation or caching somehow.

1. Start GZDoom
2. Start a new game
3. Open the console
4. Type "map map02"

The screen wipe that happens is a lot slower than usual. If you have vid_fps on you can see that fps drops when the console is down (or at least I can), which is probably what causes the slow wipe. On my laptop it drops to 20 while on my desktop it drops to about 10.

If you wait a few minutes and open the console and try again, the wipe is much faster. (or at least it is for me) If I leave the console open I can see the framerate slowly increase.

My desktop has a fairly old processor and my laptop's mobile i7 is not a whole lot better, maybe it could be tied to CPU somehow as well?

For fade and burn, yes. The wipes themselves don't cause the slowdown, they are the result of overall framerate being low when the console is open.

If I die and respawn in game or reach the end of the level, the screen wipes then are fine. It is only when the console is down that they take forever.

I could get around it by using no transition, so the map command changes the map instantly, but this still indicates some problem or in the worst case a memory leak.

Is it possible it's something that gets cleaned up over time by a garbage collector? Or does that only deal with in game objects?
