Possible to play DOOM with older music?

Post by dlf »

This may be the wrong forum for this . . . . Is it possible in (G)Zdoom to play DOOM with older music - from say the DOS release or one of these (emulated?):
  • Dosbox OPL Emulation (SB16, auto)
    Soundblaster 16 ASP (Yamaha OPL3)
Soundblaster AWE64 FM (3D off, Reverb and Chorus off)
Soundblaster AWE64 (native GM, 3D off)
EMU 4MB GS (bundled with many Soundblaster cards, dry)
MS Synth (based on Roland GS without effects)
    Roland SC-55 (Roland SC-88 in SC-55 mode)
    Roland SC-88 ()
Yamaha MU80 (TG300 mode, GS emulation, very similar to DB50XG)

Yes and no. It depends. See software synthesizers for reference. But in short:
  • Anything that is a system-wide MIDI driver can be chosen as a MIDI device (this includes MS synth if you are on Windows, as well as any actual soundcard plugged in your computer if you have the drivers for them)
  • Anything else can probably be turned into a system-wide MIDI driver with loopbe1 or midiyoke
  • ZDoom already features [wiki]OPL[/wiki] emulation and [wiki]GUS[/wiki] emulation
Now, as for DOSBox OPL emulation in particular, this one is troublesome. There are two different DOSBox OPL emulators, the most recent of which cannot be integrated in ZDoom for [wiki]license[/wiki] incompatibility reasons.
