There was one port (MBF?) that could load a Doom1 map into Doom2 and would automatically substitute any Doom1 specific textures with reasonable alternatives from Doom2. Not as good as proper texture use, obviously, but it gets you going if, for some reason, you need to do that.

Everything that has been said in this topic is of course 100% right. Doom2 has more monsters and additional weapon and powerup to use...
...but also Doom1 is divided into episodes and Doom2 goes straight. The latter option suits mapmakers better in about 90% cases.
Not that it would really matter while we have sorce ports, but why is DRD (the project, not the site :P) for Doom1? Well I'm sure I'm just being sentimental.

Why would you want to make maps for doom? That game is old and outdated. Doom 2 is where it's at.

There's reasons for the lack of Heretic and Hexen maps:

Both:
They aren't anywhere near as popular as Doom/II.

Heretic:
The lack of textures. The entire game is made of less than 50 textures, IIRC.

Hexen:
Having to balance the game for each class and the lack of weapons for each class is a killer here.

Basically, they're good stand-alone games, but they aren't really good for modding. Doom, being that it was designed to be changed, is more popular.
