Opinion: DB2 and Branches Possible Changes

Post by Tiger »

I am currently planning on some changes that I want to make with Bootless Star, but I also have my mind set one big change that will affect those that download the Doom Builder 2, GZDoom Builder, and Doom Builder 64 SVN builds -- and that change alone is expunging the ./setup directory which houses the the fundamental prerequisites - SlimDX and NET3. However, I would like to hear some opinions from everyone regarding their stance on whether this change should take effect or not.

Positives:
  • Smaller in size
    • Example: [Based on Revision 1702 in Doombuilder]

      Code: Select all

      Nicholas Gautier@Morgenrott /cygdrive/I/Bootless Star/Compiled Projects/GZDoom Builder
      $ lls
      total 24208
      562949953421362 d---------+ 1 Nicholas Gautier None 0 Feb 14 13:32 .
      562949953421361 d---------+ 1 Nicholas Gautier None 0 Feb 14 13:30 ..
      844424930132195 ----------+ 1 Nicholas Gautier None 5808380 Feb 14 13:32 GZDoom Builder (r1702)_OmittingSetup.7z
      844424930132194 ----------+ 1 Nicholas Gautier None 18959534 Feb 14 13:31 GZDoom Builder (r1702)_WithSetup.7z

    • The size with the setup directory: 18959534 bytes or ~ 19 Megabytes
    • The size without the setup directory: 5808380 bytes or ~ 6 Megabytes
  • Less wasted space or wasted resources
  • Less time needed to download (or upload in my case)
Negatives:
  • Those that do not have the prerequisites will not be able to easily install them without having to read other sources (such as: [1] [2] [3] for example)
  • Can not easily upgrade to newer version by directly referring to the setup directory.

I support taking them out from the main installation package (they could possibly be put as separate downloads alongside the SVN builds). As you can plainly see from the numbers, they're half the package and more in size. Also, with the frequent GZDoom Builder uploads, it'll help a lot.

Well, even "official" GZDoom Builder releases don't include these, so I also support this idea :)

I also support separating them out, as well. Just include a download in the folder that has the setups, separate.

Thank you for the input everyone. The changes will be made when Bootless Star Beta 8 is available, but I have no idea when that version will be available as it is going to be overhauled (I think it is long over-do for one). However, for the mean time if anyone opposes the idea - please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions.

The proposed changes discussed within this topic will take effect after Bootless Star Version 1 [core] (and Doom Builder 2 and forked project modules) is released.
