[1.0.18] Problem with RTC-3057

Post by xbolt »

Hi, I'm using my parents computer since GZDoom fails to run properly on mine.
When I try to play RTC-3057, it exits with this message:

ZDOOM Fatal Error

Tried to register class 'Pistol' more than once.

A similar thing happens with wolfen.wad. But instead of 'Pistol' it says 'powerup'.

You have to rename the 'pistol' pickup in the DECORATE lump. Best use XWE for that.

You can do the same with Wolfen but with that WAD you will run into other problems. You will have to use ZDoom 2.0.63a or older to play it.

Wouldn't renaming it mess it up? If not, what should I rename it to? And where can I get 2.0.63a?

No and whatever you like. The item is never checked for by name.

You were right: I renamed it "pistolet", and I was able to play it with GZDoom.
The item is never checked for by name.
... but it's hanging the engine?!?
The engine isn't powerful enough to rename it by itself in such a case?!?
Weird...
You can do the same with Wolfen but with that WAD you will run into other problems. You will have to use ZDoom 2.0.63a or older to play it.
If so, someone should update Wolfen (and why not its author himself... )
I dislike the idea to have to use an older version of an engine (no matter which one), and more particulary, to use anything else than GZDoom to enjoy a wad dedicated to Zdoom!!!
Maybe the reason of such a fact is that the author used tricks based on bugs, today solved... So that, the tricks are no more efficient, or they are even creating other weird effects. Am I right?

The engine can't simply rename actors with duplicate names. who knows what the names are used for? second guessing is not a good idea.

the rtc problem comes from making the names case insensitive. but it was discouraged even back then to depend on that because randy already hinted that this change might come.

wolfen simply suffers from bad luck. the powerup class was needed for the improved inventory system. the other breaking problem with wolfen is that one of hexen's puzzle items was named incorrectly in the name table used by acs but only there.

Thank you for your answer. I'll go to bed less dumb tonight... ;)

I hanged the engine with RTC-3057, while trying to go from the hub 5 to the hub 2.
Using the autosaved game, I was able to go back, but I was unable to reproduct such a problem...
And the console is horribly displayed, with messages overwriting other ones, or the line made of "-" stricking a line of possible choice.
Bah, I can live without this pwad, but... It's a great attempt to do something totally different with an amazing impression to play Doom and Quake at the same time!!!

I never had problems with the WAD and i have played it 3 times with gzdoom already. i think that was just one of the random crashes that every program will have sometimes. the console garbage is an unfortunate side effect of the console's redrawing code when displaying the progress bar and isn't easily fixed without making the console non-translucent,

I'm quite sure that you are right!!! Very stupidly, I didn't bother to save the report of the crash. It might have bring some precious informations... :(
If it's happening again, I'll do it.

When I see the architecture of this wad, I'm amazed by the quality of GZDoom, in fact. It's displayed absolutely perfectly, with an exe having a weight of only 2,14 Mb!!!
There is only one horripilous thing happening far too often: the screen is freezing suddenly during some seconds, then it's working again. But here, I'm off topic :(

The screen is freezed, but the game is not freezed, which means that, if there are monsters in front of me, they hit me quite surely. The player is freezed, but not the game. And if I hit the key "forward", when the screen is no more freezed, I find myself further several meters (imagines if I am opposite acid or lava…)
I'm absolutely not sure that it becomes from GZDoom!!!
My Ati Radeon 9700 Pro is using new drivers since some months, absolutely revolutionists, with pretty all the settings at the max. I must verify if one of the settings may produce such a problem.
