I realise that this doesn't give much to go on but I don't have anything from GZDoom to post. This is mainly just to note that it happened.
I was playing FreeDoom2 on medium difficulty, had warped to map03 and completed it and continued on to map04. I was quite far through map04 and had just released a trap with lots of demon-worm things in it. I was backing off (my location was almost exactly the player start spot, but facing East) and killing them with the rocket launcher and then the game froze: the visuals froze, the music kept playing, no controls were responsive. Eventually the rabbit-head mouse cursor appeared and after a few seconds more, a Windows 10 "This program has stopped responding" dialogue appeared. I did not get a crash log of any sort to post.
lights and brightmaps, some skins and a crosshairs WAD were loaded.

This sounds like it somehow got stuck in some kind of recursion. Those often do not produce a crash log.
