That has never been an "option" on DRD Team. It was mitigated by the way different styles showed different layouts, but there was never an explicit option for it. When I dropped support for the 20 or so different styles the site used to have, avatars being shown on the left went away with it.
If you find me an addon that adds it as a user option (and does not force every user to see their avatar on the left whether they want to or not) - I will add it. Keep in mind, though, I use phpBB 3.1, and will likely be upgrading to phpBB 3.2 soon.
