Console Port?

Post by Matt534Dog »

Could there ever be a console port of Hacx? It would obviously be free and downloadable, but are there any problems with porting it over to a console platform?

Yes.

The problem is that console development requires a license, which must be obtained from the console manufacturer (so, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft...).

And they are quite expensive. Among other reasons, this serves as a barrier to entry because console manufacturers are control freaks about what can get on their machines. There's sound business reasons for that: consoles are sold at a loss, so they make their profits off of game sales, so they need to control development studios to make sure they go through the distribution channels they operate so that they can get money from each sale.

That's why console games are usually $10 to $30 more expensive than the PC version.

The last thing they want is indie developers releasing a ton of freeware.

Hacx's license also explicitly forbids it from being sold in any way, shape, or form, so that'd be another obstacle. Much as I like the idea of having it a free download on said markets, it's a pipe dream at best.
