Hacx 2.0 [r61] from the Wayback machine, and possibility of future development?

Post by Elon_Satoshi »

I just discovered Hacx 2.0, and it's awesome, and since Ionline apparently shut down like many websites have before it, I'm glad there was a copy that was scanned in by the Archive's spider.

Is there anybody out there who's capable of developing Hacx and is still online occasionally? If anyone's still around that has the rights to do so, could we release Hacx to the public, to copy and modify freely, perhaps with a license such as Freedoom's BSD license? That way, anybody could contribute to Hacx in the future, and help finish/improve it and keep it alive.

While Hacx has been released free as in beer, I don't believe the rights holders are willing to release it under an open license. (Of course if Nostromo drops by and says otherwise, then I stand corrected.) So as long as Hacx 2.0 retains any bit of Hacx 1.x then that's really a no go. Although if someone was interested in picking up development again the person to get in contact with would probably be Xaser.

Hmm. Xaser hasn't been seen on this forum since 2015, and Dr_Nostromo since 2018.

Here I am.

I used to check the forum everyday but it's been so long since anyone's posted anything, I sort of let it drift out of my daily to-do list.

Hacx, and all it's associated files, is fully distributable and modifiable as long as it is treated royalty free (i.e., you do not make any money off of it), and you include credit where credit is due. If you have an official copy, there should be an EULA included.

Hacx 2 3D (the version Banjo was working on when it collapsed) is not distributable and never will be. The version 2 that is (was) being developed by Xaser falls under the same royalty free license. I haven't heard from him in a long time, though.
If your heart is in the right place, then it's just to the left of center.

Xaser's new site is at https://xaser.angryscience.net/works/doom/wips/hacx/ but I don't see a download there.

I posted a smooth weapon mod for Hacx and got 0 response, thought this was dead.

As the title says: any possibility of future development? I'm still hoping for a polish and finish Hacx!
