A guide for setting up the source code?

There's been a lot of changes that I'm still trying to understand, Cmake being one of them. Can someone please tell me how to set it up so I can make it work once I've finished this step-by-step walkthrough?

I'm serious. I need to find out what exactly is causing my GZdoom to crash so often per few maps, and I need to figure out what changes I've caused to AEons of Death which are causing these crashes. Please, can someone help me out?

I don't know if you're still looking for a guide, but that linked article above has been updated by someone to include instructions on how to compile the source with VS Express 2013 and CMake.
