Currently none of the GL ports do this. I'm sure it can be done through pixel shaders or something.

Question is: "Why not?"...

It's not correct. Instead of darkening, it should fade toward the fog color instead of simply fading towards black.

It's as correct as this effect can be done. Semi-subtractive blending modes like the one I use and fog don't mix well, that's why there is code to compensate. But it can only compensate up to a certain point. I think it fades quite well into fog. You should see how this effect would look unhandled.
