svn.drdteam.org/experimental/GZDoom-trimbugfix.zip
If you have an old ATI or Intel chipset, you might have suffered from this bug. In this thread, Graf says it's caused by the sprite trimming feature. In this custom build, you will find in Options->OpenGL Options->Textures Options something to turn sprite trimming off.
Additionally, it updates GZDoom to r2113 of ZDoom. Full details can be seen in the included patch file if you're curious.
Anyway, please report if it now works when you turn gl_trimsprites off.

Re: GZDoom with (hopefully) a workaround for the sprite bug
Actually, this has caused an even worse bug for me. When I turn off the trimming of sprite edges and try to start a new game, it plays about a second of the first level's music and then immediately crashes back to desktop with no error message or anything.

Okay, that one issue should be fixed now. Please redownload and retry.

I can't comment on the bugfix because I don't get the bug but this build does not crash for me.

Now the crash is gone, but unfortunately it doesn't appear to fix the sprite bug. With sprite trimming turned off, it still displays the same sprites as squashed that were before.
EDIT: Also, for what it's worth, this build seems to have either reset or disabled my gamma correction settings.

Do you have sprite squashing with build 703?

Nope - looks fine in that build.

Yeah, just as Jamesff said, there's no sprite problems in that build. They all display properly for me!
