I'm still confused what Beryl is in relation to XGL. Is it a source fork? Is it more stable? What gives?
Can I use Metacity or do I still have to use Compiz for the nifty effects? (some of which are very useful)

I've fallen out of the XGL loop. I've been waiting for XGL to go stable in Portage, should I be looking for Beryl instead now?

XGL is OpenGL acceleration for X, you need it to run Beryl (there's also Aiglx which provides OpenGL acceleration, you can use it instead of XGL). Beryl is fork of Compiz. Metacity is GNOME's window manager, you can use Beryl instead of it.
