Reworking the Sounds

Post by .+:icytux:+. »

Hey. I've been doing some soundwork for Hacx to replace some of the sounds that are of poor quality. Starting with the Thug, Phage and Monstruct.
The original recordings had a lot of background hum, and a reverb/delay that gave the downsampled sounds a very weird effect. The player pain and death sounds have the same issue.

Load this up with the latest Hacx2.0 iwad to test the sounds ingame.

(The sounds in the wad are downsampled to better fit with the rest of the existing sounds)

I tried keeping the style of the Phage sounds, cause I liked them originally. And I tried making the Monstruct and Thug sound more menacing.
I feel I succeeded well with the Phage and Monstruct but I'm going to polish or redo the Thug sounds (the sprites are so silly, hard to get a good matching sound :D ).

----------------------------------------------------

I also feel that some of the projectile, door, and lift sounds could do with some touchups, and I'll see what I can do about that.
I might also give reworking the android sounds and the buzzer sounds a shot, but they don't neccesarily have to be replaced.

I will obviously also make some of the missing sounds for the ICE and the Genie Spawn, as well as the replacement for the Terminatrix.

Thoughts? Any other sounds you guys think need touching up?

I am very impressed. :D

I'd take a look at replacing most or all of the old sounds. The explosions sit right at the distortion level, especially the Nuker blast.

I think it would also be a good idea to target 22KHz for a lot of the new sounds. (The glass shatter, for example, is better than the odl one but still sounds rather awful after getting so downsampled). Since 2.0 is targetting modern ports, I don't see a good reason to damage the audio quality so much.

Here are some new sounds for our now beautiful Mecha-Boy ! (thanks Cage)
Minor adjustments have been made after that demo to the sounds mixing-wise again to fit ingame properly

Aaand here are some new sounds for our new beautiful Buzzer!

These might still change but so-far this is what I've got, works pretty darn well ingame!
