Werid Video problems in OpenGL!

I have an ATI radeon x700 pci-e 256mb video card.
in a LCD samsung syncmaster 192N
In software mode is all daisies. But in OpenGL mode... things change.
In windowed mode, any resolution works fine, with no glitches and similar. But when I go fullscreen mode or I get "Screen resolution not supported" or I got today this morning a really scary monitor crash. It turned all white with colored vertical stripes all over the place! I thoght I burned my LCD screen!! I rebooted my pc and all came back to place (thank god).
I attached a crappy paint brush recriation of the werid scary monitor error, for curiosity porposes
So, why in the name of god fullscreen does not work!?

drivers problem!!!
I suggest: reinstall your video card drivers AFTER having deleted TOTALLY everything related to this card (and reinstal DirectX after it)
Maybe a previous version could solve your problem if this reinstallation don't give you satisfaction (do have a look at a forum related to your card)

I got a paranoia when related to video drivers.. i think that my card will blow up...
i think i will just download the latest drivers and see what happens then..
thanks!

I re-installed all the ATI newest drivers and the problem persisted.. So i tried evry resolution in fullscreen to see if it works and I found one: 1280x960
its really weird.. From resolution 320x200 to 512x384 it works, from 640x400 to 1152x864 don't work and the 1280x960 works..
all the 5:4 ratio resolutions works as well, so I dunno what is happening!

Try setting gl_vid_refreshhz to 60 in the config file. Unfortunately there seem to be some monitors which report refresh rates to the system they can't handle.

That was it! I totally forgot about monitor refresh rates! I remembered that issue the exect time I passes my eyes through the "refreshhz" expression!
It worked! Now i can handle with every resolution!!
Thanks Graf!

I use "QuickRes", and the resolutions AND the refresh rates are automatically well defined, no matter the game (of course, I have previously selected the correct ones).
That said, I have to rectify: Ati cards are perfect, but their drivers are pure shit. And I don't talk of the CCC (Catalyst Control Center), eating a huge space on the hard disk drive and a huge quantity of memory, absolutely unuseful and very badly coded.
I'm authorized to write it because I use Ati cards since a very long time and I know those cards very well...
If I kept my Radeon 9700 Pro, it's all a matter of money. If I have had the needed money to change it, I would have put it in the dust bin, where it should be, and I would have buy a Gforce (at least, a Nvidia product, but surely not something coming from Ati).

The fight between nVidia and ATI just comes down to loyalty. They're the two best, and essentially equal, yet people still flame supporters of either company. It's really quite immature, and very pointless.
Anyway, Betanol, the chances are - you're not gonna blow up your video card

Don't panic so much.

Since ATi's GL drivers are so bad they are hardly equal.

I agree 100%: to flame supporters is a huge stupidity. If they are happy, we have only to say "What a chance!"
But the problem with drivers badly coded is VERY well known. Ati cards are fantastic, but none is correctly drived. The problem with the CCC is so well known that a petition on internet has been made to force the manufactor to listen to their users, but it was... quite imature and very pointless to think that they will do something after this petition.
So, nothing "comes down to loyalty". Nvidia cards are less good, but their drivers are correctly coded. In term of performance, they are quite equal, but not in term of features. Ati's new feature "Temporal Anti-Aliasing" is simply fabulous and there is no more any aliasing, no matter the picture and the angle of its lines.

That's really nothing new. Here's pretty much the same feature on an nVidia card (8xS anti-aliasing):

There is really something new.
Do have a look at the way to produce the AA effect...
The efficiency of Ati cards is better: Nvidia is still producing angles on its lines, because the number of pixels following the ones of the lines is less important (half, more or less)
But I don't want to begin a war between the 2 communities.
Both cards are fantastic, period.
