Total freeze in 1.0.24

Un fortunately, I know I won't be able to post any information that makes this traceable. However, it has happened to me a few times and I just wondered if other people had experienced anything similar.
I was playing Geist's recently released Episode 1 replacement. These levels are very simple and basic in nature and there are no additional bits and pieces like DECORATE or whatever. There is a MAPINFO lump but I think the maps themselves are pretty much vanilla Doom compat.
Anyway, I'd gotten to E1M8 in a single sitting and about 30 seconds or so into the map, the game just froze. There was nothing unusual on screen (mainly a bunch of demons) and I was just shooting them with the shotgun when the game froze completely. A had to ctrl-alt-del to get GZdoom to quit. When it did, I went back in and was able to complete the level without any problems.
I don't think there is anything particularly wrong in the map and, like I said, I realise that doesn't give much, if anything, to go on but I have had a few freezes like that in the past and I wondered if other people had experienced similar and could perhaps give more clues as to what might be going on. The only thing I can think of is that I had been playing continuously for quite a while, but - for example - I've played most of KDiZD in one go without any problems and that took a lot longer. The only difference being that, with Geists levels, I had not saved or loaded a game at all because I had not died.
If anyone wants to see the maps, they are basic (ie they look almost like the Doom pre release maps) but I actually found the level set good, old fashioned fun to play.
