1.0.27 Game freeze

I realise this won't give you much to go on, but just so you know it happened (and did so a couple of times with 1.0.26 as well):

A few times, in the middle of play, the game has frozen totally and the only sign of life was the sound that was playing at the time of the freeze playing over and over in short succession. I don't know if music would have also been playing as I had the music turned down.

The most recent case of this freeze was when I activated a switch that made a number of lifts lower. The lifts were all slightly different heights so did not reach the bottom at the same time. However, when one of them got to the bottom, the game froze and the sound of a lift clunking at the bottom of its drop played over and over whilst everything else on the screen stopped. I tried a few things to get it working again but eventually had to kill GZdoom with Ctrl-Alt-Del. I went back in and played the same level without any problems. One other time, I remember it was the sound of the pistol that was playing over and over (or perhaps it was a zombie shooting).

No crash logs available.

I just got it now... map13 -host 1 game, summoned a friendly cyberdemon and the freeze happened just as it fired a rocket into a wall.

First time I've gotten such a freeze in a long, long time.

Mine either crashes with an error or the music just loops like a broken record and freezes up, usually upon loading a map.

I'm wondering if this has any relation to this:

http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic ... 05&start=0

Basically out of nowhere, Skulltag has been getting some massive freezing randomly and we can't figure where or why its happening :/

I thought this may have been cured with 1.0.29 but I got one of these annoying freezes again today. It was on a level I had played many times before and where I was doing nothing unusual or different to those previous times.

I know that gives you pretty much nothing to go on. I'm just reporting that it still happens. :(

I suspect hardware problems. If it goes as with one of my previous computers the freezes will become more frequent and eventually affect other applications as well.

It has only been GZdoom that it has happened with. To be fair though, GZdoom is the only demanding program that I run very frequently so it has the highest chance of being the one that gets caught out by this, if it is a hardware issue.

[edit] FWIW, I just remembered that I had a copy of 1.0.16 installed up until last week because I was using it for something specific and, although I played it as often (if not more than) the other, newer versions, it was always 1.0.27 and now 1.0.29 that hung and not 1.0.16. :? [/edit]

I never noticed that description before. That seems pretty close to what I'm experiencing - but with a sound rather than the music (which is often turned down so I wouldn't hear it anyway).

It happened again yesterday a couple of times. Today, I just got through an extended session of playing with Zdoom r661 (yes, I finally installed the SVN version). If I'd have been playing that long with GZdoom, I'd have expected to get the problem. It didn't happen with Zdoom. I don't suppose that means too much though. :?

Just to keep recording instances of this, it has happened 3 times since I got 1.32. Today I'd been playing a map for about 20 mins (foolishly without saving) and GZdoom froze on me. At least it has been a little easier to ctrl-alt-del out of.

I'm in the process of sourcing new hardware to build a new machine so it will be interesting to see if this continues on the new one. So far no other programs are exhibiting similar symptoms.

I get the same problem, but it only seems to happen shortly after the level has loaded up.

And to keep on recording them...

I thought the significant changes in the exe recently may have somehow made a difference but I just got one of these lock-ups whilst playing a pretty standard map on Doom2 with r78.

As yet, I have not experienced anything similar with any other programs.

And nothing about my suspicion has changed.

Have you tried different settings? (vid_vsync and cl_capfps are good candidates to start because they really reduce the amount of work the GFX card has to do.)

I have tried quite a few options but with it being quite intermittent, it's hard to come up with anything concrete. For example, I'm working on a sizable map and have played through it loads of times over the last couple of weeks without a problem. Then today I was playing a tiny map, not much bigger than E1M1 and that's where the freeze happened. Trying to repeat the problem just gave me an error free play of the map. If I change an option, it may be a day or two (or longer) before I get another freeze so the process of eliminating various options is a lengthy one.

I know it has little bearing on the situation, but I've also been able to play quite demanding games, such as Oblivion and Unreal2, without problems.

When I get my new computer (which has had to be delayed a little, unfortunately) that will be more interesting. Fingers crossed that when I do get that machine, the problem will simply vanish.

I've had loads of video problems on GZDoom lately, fortunatly my new laptop has none -yet it is slow and doesnt support texture shaders, still, its not too bad.
Anyway, my main PC randomly dies in the middle of playing GZDoom, from freeze, to the screen going black to a horrible blue screen, but this PC is now completely dead and blue screens on startup due to RAM and GPU incomatabilities with my motherboard and cpu so its just the hardware for me i guess, but it used to work no problem at all, no changes, slowly dying over time...

Some computers do that...
