Screen not being properly cleared (r522M)

I think someone reported a similar problem not long ago? anyways. the glitch can be seen the first time you start a new game (restarting it does not trigger the glitch) right before the screen wiping effect wears off.

Works fine for me. What graphics card and driver version does this happen on?

256mb GeForce 6200 + Forceware 94.24 (first edition)

Update: if I delete the .ini file (config) before running GZDoom, then the glitch doesn't occur, though it will return next time unless the config is deleted again.

I can't see the pic due to the filters at my work but from the description it sounds like something that I may have noticed too. Basically, when starting a new game from the titlepic, when map01 first appears, the titlepic can still be seen briefly on parts of the view (mainly stuff a little way off in the distance) almost the same kind of effect that you'd get with a HOM. ie, whatever was on the screen before is being drawn in certain areas. So the area around the player is drawn as are many of the walls but perhaps part of the pipe wall at the back of the starting room (usually to the right) will have the titlepic on it or maybe something through in the tekgreen corridor will have the titlepic instead of its correct appearance. It only lasts less than a second and then things are fine. It hasn't really been a problem as such but I have noticed it.

Speaking of startup issues, I've noticed if a mod has a whole bunch of new ammo types, these appear in the althud a second or so after the map starts rather than instantly like they do with the default ammo types. I noticed it with my burghead mod which, from memory, also has an althudcf lump so perhaps that's why. It's not really a problem, I'm just asking if it's expected behaviour.

I'm REALLY going to go out on a limb here and blame this on the driver.

94.24 is ancient.

The hardware being used is ancient, too.

Anyway, I'm going to check this on my old computer which still uses a driver of similar vintage when I find the time.

OK, I'm home now and can see the screenshot. That is exactly the kind of effect that I have seen too. I mean exactly - the same areas of the screen and everything. I am sure that I have seen it on much newer hardware with much newer drivers than Sussudio but I can't remember exactly when I saw it last. However, I don't think that it was that long ago and I'm pretty sure that it was on my current machine. However, given that it only lasts a tic or two, it didn't bother me and I had just put it down to there being a bit of disk activity or something going on at the same time as GZdoom started - perhaps just enough to slow down the initial drawing of the screen.

Which wipe style?

I normally have mine set to "Burn" so probably that one but I can't say for certain that was the type active when I saw the effect. However, ATM I can't seem to get it from any of the modes.

If it's only with Burn I can't help you. That style is broken and I have no idea how to fix it.

Does that explain the "screen goes completely white whilst burning" effect when visiting the same map a number of times too?

Anyway, I'll switch to crossfade and report if it ever happens there.

Edit: nevermind, the glitch is still there, and I can't seem to make out a pattern. I can reproduce it in probably 1 out of 3 attempts, but it's still very random nonetheless.

I just got it too with r555. Screen wipe style was Burn. Can't think of anything else relevant.

[edit]
Just tried. I can get the effect with Burn, Crossfade and Melt. Here's a screenshot of how it appears for me. I noticed a zombieman showing through the wall too:

Image

Interestingly, I got that screenshot by stabbing at the printscreen key a as the game started. I say interestingly because I got two screenshots and the first one (Screenshot_Doom_20091017_230300.png) looked normal - ie the effect was not visible - and the next one (Screenshot_Doom_20091017_230317.png) is the one above. I can't say that I noticed the screen appearing normal before the effect but I guess that it must have done.

Most of the time I do not get the effect but when I have a certain file loaded, it seems to significantly increase the chances of the effect happening. The file isn't mine, it was one that I was sent to check something in so I'll send it by PM.

Interesting. r555 is definitely working correctly on my computer. Tried each screen wiping effect 20 times under different configs and the glitch did not occur.

It's back in r604, but I can still confirm r555 is glitch-free.
