This is what happens for brightmapped sprites in the official version.
Windows Vista x64, ATI 4870 X2, Catalyst 9.10.

Hmmm... not happening on my nVidia
I tried with brightmaps loaded with and without lights.pk3. Both worked as expected.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is another manifestation of your own dark sprites bug. I recomment to recheck with the upcoming revision.
