The crash happens in the Dehacked parser. But I was just able to start the WAD without problems and run around in the first few levels without problems.

What are all the other WADs you are loading? Is there anything with a Dehacked patch in that list?

It doesn't crash for me so it is most likely some interference with all the other stuff. You should try to narrow down the problem because as it is now I can't find anything wrong.

Bug with Vile Flesh, Legacy version

Post by Jive »

I'm using the version 2.0.96.0

Maybe my post will help you to work around with this bug, related to... the dehacked patch!!!
Obviously, something is wrong with dehacked.

Legacy is handling perfectly well the dehacked patches included within a pwad, as long as their lump entry is named "DEHACKED".
But GZDoom don't seem to use it.
So, I added on the command line:
-deh C:\Doom\KDX\pwad\Doom2\_Megawad\Vile\Doc\VILE.DEH
As soon as I made it, GZDoom crashed each time I tried it.
When I deleted this line, GZDoom launched the pwad normally.

The other thing is that I'm using the launcher made by King Elvis: KDX, but I can't believe that there is something to do with it.

To let you make your own tries, here is the url to have it:
Vile Flesh
You'll find the dehacked patch alone in the "doc" repertory, if you accept to unzip with the stored paths, with the name of "VILE.DEH"

Another problem: the url given on the screen is wrong. http://forum.drdteam.org
It will direct you toward the Zdoom forum, not here!

Thank you!

Here is the dehacked patch:

YOU HAVE ENTERED DEEPLY INTO THE INFESTED
STARPORT. BUT SOMETHING IS WRONG. THE
MONSTERS HAVE BROUGHT THEIR OWN REALITY
WITH THEM, AND THE STARPORT'S TECHNOLOGY
IS BEING SUBVERTED BY THEIR PRESENCE.

AHEAD, YOU SEE AN OUTPOST OF HELL, A
FORTIFIED ZONE. IF YOU CAN GET PAST IT,
YOU CAN PENETRATE INTO THE HAUNTED HEART
OF THE STARBASE AND FIND THE CONTROLLING
SWITCH WHICH HOLDS EARTH'S POPULATION
HOSTAGE.THE SENSE OF FAMILIARITY IS ALMOST AS
EXPECTED AS THE SENSE OF DREAD YOU FEEL
AS YOU ENTER THE UAC LABORATORIES.
YOU'VE MOST CERTAINLY BEEN HERE BEFORE.
YOU KNOW THAT TELEPORTATION TECHNOLOGY
HAS BEEN TESTED HERE, GOING FROM ONE
POINT IN THE BASE TO ANOTHER.

BUT THE DEMONS MUST HAVE UTILISED IT,
SPREADING THEIR VILE ESSENCE THROUGHOUT
THE BASE, AND MOST LIKELY BEYOND...

Text 617 619
YOU HAVE WON! YOUR VICTORY HAS ENABLED
HUMANKIND TO EVACUATE EARTH AND ESCAPE
THE NIGHTMARE. NOW YOU ARE THE ONLY
HUMAN LEFT ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET.
CANNIBAL MUTATIONS, CARNIVOROUS ALIENS,
AND EVIL SPIRITS ARE YOUR ONLY NEIGHBORS.
YOU SIT BACK AND WAIT FOR DEATH, CONTENT
THAT YOU HAVE SAVED YOUR SPECIES.

BUT THEN, EARTH CONTROL BEAMS DOWN A
MESSAGE FROM SPACE: "SENSORS HAVE LOCATED
THE SOURCE OF THE ALIEN INVASION. IF YOU
GO THERE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO BLOCK THEIR
ENTRY. THE ALIEN BASE IS IN THE HEART OF
YOUR OWN HOME CITY, NOT FAR FROM THE
STARPORT." SLOWLY AND PAINFULLY YOU GET
UP AND RETURN TO THE FRAY.YOU'RE NO LONGER SURE WHICH REALITY YOU'RE
TRAVELING IN, YOUR OWN OR THAT OF THE
DEMONS. JUDGING BY YOUR SURROUNDINGS
THOUGH, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE STILL ON
HOME GROUND.

FROM THIS POINT, THE BASE CONTINUES DOWN
FOR SOME WHILE. YOU KNOW THAT SOON YOU'LL
BE SLUGGING YOUR WAY THROUGH THE MINING
FACILITIES DEEP UNDERGROUND.

THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU MUST FIND THE HELL
GATE IS TICKLING THE BACK OF YOUR MIND,
BUT YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOU'LL DO THAT.
KNOWING THE DEMONS, THOUGH, THEY'LL MAKE
IT PRETTY OBVIOUS WHEN YOU'VE STRUCK GOLD.

Text 312 312
YOU ARE AT THE CORRUPT HEART OF THE CITY,
SURROUNDED BY THE CORPSES OF YOUR ENEMIES.
YOU SEE NO WAY TO DESTROY THE CREATURES'
ENTRYWAY ON THIS SIDE, SO YOU CLENCH YOUR
TEETH AND PLUNGE THROUGH IT.

THERE MUST BE A WAY TO CLOSE IT ON THE
OTHER SIDE. WHAT DO YOU CARE IF YOU'VE
GOT TO GO THROUGH HELL TO GET TO IT?THE SLEW OF DEMONS YOU'VE JUST DISPATCHED
WAS ONLY THE TIP OF THE DEMONIC ICEBURG, A
SMALL TASTER OF WHAT AWAITS YOU AT THE
NEXT STOP ON YOUR MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR OF
HELL.

YOU'VE GOT TO FIND THE WAY OUT OF HERE
FAST. EARTH DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE IF THESE
HELL-SPAWN BASTARDS AREN'T COMPLETELY
OBLITERATED!

Text 494 492
THE HORRENDOUS VISAGE OF THE BIGGEST
DEMON YOU'VE EVER SEEN CRUMBLES BEFORE
YOU, AFTER YOU PUMP YOUR ROCKETS INTO
HIS EXPOSED BRAIN. THE MONSTER SHRIVELS
UP AND DIES, ITS THRASHING LIMBS
DEVASTATING UNTOLD MILES OF HELL'S
SURFACE.

YOU'VE DONE IT. THE INVASION IS OVER.
EARTH IS SAVED. HELL IS A WRECK. YOU
WONDER WHERE BAD FOLKS WILL GO WHEN THEY
DIE, NOW. WIPING THE SWEAT FROM YOUR
FOREHEAD YOU BEGIN THE LONG TREK BACK
HOME. REBUILDING EARTH OUGHT TO BE A
LOT MORE FUN THAN RUINING IT WAS.
FINALLY, THE BAPHOMET CRUMBLES BEFORE YOU,
IT'S EAR-PIERCING DEATH CRY REVERBERATING
AROUND THE DESSIMATED CITY.
ONCE AGAIN YOU ARE VICTORIOUS. ONCE AGAIN
YOU HAVE STOPPED THE DEMON HOARDS.

YOU FALL TO YOUR KNEES IN FRONT OF THE
DECAYING REMAINS OF THE DEMON LORD AND
SIGH. YOU WONDER IF THIS TIME IT'S TRULY
OVER, THAT HELL WILL NEVER RISE AGAIN.
A DEEP, RUMBLING ROAR CAN BE HEARD FROM
BEYOND THE RUINS OF THE CITY.
SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT.

THE DEMONS HAVE ONE MORE TRICK TO PULL...

Text 164 166
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'VE FOUND THE SECRET
LEVEL! LOOKS LIKE IT'S BEEN BUILT BY
HUMANS, RATHER THAN DEMONS. YOU WONDER
WHO THE INMATES OF THIS CORNER OF HELL
WILL BE.CURIOUS...
YOU APPEAR TO HAVE STEPPED INTO A
PARALLEL UNIVERSE. IT LOOKS AND FEELS
FAMILIAR, BUT SOMETHING SEEMS ODD.
IT'S KINDA LIKE THE PLACE IS JUST A
ROUGH DRAFT.

Text 92 92
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'VE FOUND THE
SUPER SECRET LEVEL! YOU'D BETTER
BLAZE THROUGH THIS ONE!
THIS PART OF THE BASE IS
ROTTING.

Fixed Jive's crash. The last one is unrelated to Dehacked though but I can't see a cause for that in there. The level works for me.

Very strange, indeed, because I didn't have any problem on this map.
I must advise you that I used ZenNode v1.2 on it fefore playing.
I tried it with and without monsters, 2 times.

The nodes you build with Zennode will be thrown away by GZDoom because it needs GL nodes. This shouldn't have any impact.

I meant: how did you solve the bug with VILE.DEH ?
And what was the bug?

Thank you to advise me about GL Nodes, because I didn't know it...
Sorry, I'm a newbie with GZDoom...

It was simply a case of not setting a pointer to NULL that was checked afterward. The Dehacked parser loads some data and frees it after it is done. But when run the second time it thought that some data was still valid although it was not.
