I started to work quite often with Skyboxes these days but there is one thing that keeps me a headache: 360° skyboxes with a resolution of 256x256 for one side looks bad, blurred and almost like the standard doom sky, which actually sucks. With 512x512 it's much better but the problem with such a resolution is the size. Most skyboxes have a lot of different colors and look like shit, if you try to apply a 256color palette to them (even if it is optimized for each side), if you start with filters to achieve a better result, it still looks bad. So I have to keep these textures in PNG 24Bit format to make them look good but the other side of this coin is the size of the 24Bit pngs, so a full skybox in 24bit and 512x512 in dimensions weighs 1,2MB - 2MB and increases the size of a WAD a lot.
So is there a chance to add another image format that is smaller? JPG for example would help alot here as PNGs and TGAs can't be compressed really good!
