[old hardware]Graphics problems...

Post by NecroMage »

I have two problems. One I can guess the answer too. Whenever I totaly look down I get this: Image
Whenever I run a wad with GZDoom and exit this is how the desktop looks:
Image
If the picture looks fine then the problem is that all the colors are messed up. As I am typing this the textbox is gray and the area outside of it is purple. As well as everything turning blacker.

I do not know all the computer specs (as its my dad's) but I think its got a 550 megahz processor and its running intergrated video (i think we got this before 2000 as well). The intergrated video does not allow opengl to run.

Edit: The second one is the one that bothers me and the only fix I have found is to reset it (witch is what I just did) and that gets to be a big pain. Also it appears that the pic comes up normal so I do not know what is wrong.

I can tell you the answer to the first one: You're running in software mode. And software doesn't like complete up-down looking at all.

The screwed up colors are a result of the graphics driver not resetting the palette properly when exiting the game. But since you already said that this is an old integrated chipset it doesn't really surprise me that stuff like this happens.

Is there a way to manually reset the palette other then just reseting the computer?

I am guessing you play in fullscreeen. If so then switch to windowed mode. The ZDooM series has a sad sad problem and that is that the color system gets severly mucked up in fullscreen mode. The major telltale sign is when the colors start flickering. I have had happen on several systems which is why I no longer play in fullscreen.

Changing screen resolution should do it. Or make sure that your desktop doesn't run at 8 bit color depth. All these effects are caused by graphics drivers that don't care anymore about proper handling of 8-bit modes.

I tried changing the resolution but that has not worked. So it might be because it is running at 8 bit color depth. I will have to look into that stuff.

The only way I can make it viewable is by going back to 256 colors but it does not reset the palette if you go back to a higher color pallette (I generally use 32-bit).
