i'm new, and i have a few questions. I'm a mapper, i map for Doom legacy, a chexquest game. i was thinking of swicting to Gzdoom. i was wondering why the GZdoom doom format.cfg has a Hexen format.

Probably a copy and paste error on the CFG authors' behalf.

Why don't you use the Hexen format anyway? Most of GZDoom's advanced features benefit (or require) the Hexen format. Otherwise you might as well not switch to GZDoom right?

I never used that format before. So i got lost really easy. But i guess i could try it out.
