Lastest GZDoom slower than normal, or not?

Post by Orl »

Hello all. I'll try and keep this as accurate as I can.

Basically, the last time I had used gzdoom was a few months ago, playing the tutnt mod. My specs for the time were 1GB of RAM, a P4 3.0ghz, and an ATI Radeon x600 card running on Windows XP. I don't recall which version of gzdoom I had at the time, but I distinctly remember the mod running very well with little framerate drops.

I am now currently running on Windows Vista with 2.5GB of RAM, with the same processor and graphics card. I had decided to load up tutnt and play through it again, using the latest version of gzdoom, 1.0.32.

But now, even in small areas, my framerate is much lower than it used to be. Most noticeably when looking directly up or down, or when in a large open area. I have played up to "Beyond the Dark Portal" but I had to stop there, because of the comets literally making the game unresponsive. I KNOW for a fact I was able to play tutnt on a system with less RAM much better than now, so why would this severe framerate drop be happening?

My guess would be the latest version of gzdoom has something wrong with it in terms of rendering, which is making gameplay unstable, but that is just my guess.

If someone would be kind enough to give me any previous versions of gzdoom so I could test them and see if the latest version is the problem, I would appreciate it.

Or if someone thinks its not gzdoom but something entirely different that's giving me the trouble, please tell me.

That is all for now, thanks.

You've changed your entire operating system and GZdoom is responsible for the slowdown? I suspect the problem lies elsewhere.

The latest GZdoom is running no slower or faster for me than previous versions.

Anyway, if you want to try other versions, just go to the download page. The download link will take you to the the current file but the previous versions should still be available. Just use the address for the current version but change the number part of the address to reflect the version you want to download.

ATI's GL drivers for Vista are apparently still inferior in performance to the XP version. Pathetic!

That was my second thought, ATI drivers. Really gotta get myself an Nvidia.

Anyway Graf, you seem to know what you are talking about all of the time, but I'm not quite convinced just yet. Do you have any reports that indicate for a fact that ATI's drivers for Vista are inferior's to XP? Because all of the applications and games I ran on XP run at the same exact speed as they do on Vista. The only exception is of course, GZDoom.

That's hard to say. Applications that spend more time in the rendering hardware obvioulsly would be affected more.

However, since I don't have an ATI card (for good reasons) I really can only guess here.
Maybe it's just an isolated feature that isn't working properly. When I switched from my old system (3.2 GHz Pentium with XP and GF6800) to my new one (Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz with Vista and GF 8600) I noticed some severe performance drops which I could track down to 2 things in the code that clearly triggered undefined behavior so I had to change them. Maybe it's the same here but since I don't have the hardware to track this down the chances are rather slim that it may get fixed.

Could you at least post your .ini file? Maybe I can see something in there that might be resonsible.

Here is the zipped .ini file from version 1.0.32. Hopefully you can track down the problem.
