[r374] Crash in Necrosis

Post by Slasher123 »

I was playing the recently released Hexen mod Necrosis (link to the project thread on zdoom forums here), and I got a crash suddenly on level 8. I'm not sure what caused it, I was playing normally.

Here is the crash report I initially received:
CrashReport.zip
The first crash report
(23.24 KiB) Downloaded 48 times
And now, upon trying to reload my save game, I can consistently get GZDoom to crash.

Here's the save game:
savegame.zip
The save game.
(373.24 KiB) Downloaded 54 times
And here is the crash report when attempting to load the save game:
CrashReport2.zip
Crash report when loading the save game.
(24.04 KiB) Downloaded 60 times

This savegame is for a completely different WAD. I can't test with it.

Hmm, interesting. When I load Hexen without any other WADs, that save game shows in the load menu as "DOM", or Dream of Magic, a different Hexen mod. But when I load Hexen and Necrosis.wad, that save game appears in the load menu as "Necrosis". So somehow, the same savegame is being treated as two separate game saves depending on when I load Necrosis with it.

Does the same happen for you?

It's the only save file I have in my Hexen zdoom folder, so I can't upload any other save games.

Look in the folder where your copy of Necrosis is if it isn't in the main Hexen directory. I've noticed that savegames can end up in the directory that the WAD is in rather than the exe under certain circumstances.

The screenshot in the save looks like this:

And that's not Necrosis.

Necrosis.wad and GZDoom.exe are in the same directory, so I don't think it's that. There's only one save game file in that folder, save0.zds, and that's the one I uploaded here in the first post. It's the only save game I had been using when playing Necrosis, and it was saving to that file just fine until I got the crash. After that it failed to load, and instantly crashed GZDoom.

I do have Dream of Magic in my Hexen folder, but I haven't played that mod in a quite a while, and certainly not with the version of GZDoom used in this bug report.

So now, I'm not sure what else to say about it. But why does it show up in the load menu as "Necrosis", if it's a Dream of Magic save? Is that happening to anyone else?

Play a game with Necrosis loaded, bring down the console and type "savedir" to see if that gives any clues. Chances are that it will just report "" as an answer but no harm in trying.

If that doesn't give any clues, try using Windows explorer to search your hard drive for *.zds and see what it comes up with. You must have more than the one save. That file you uploaded has information in it about which files were loaded at the time of the save and there is no mention of Necrosis at all. Yet, clearly, you have a file with the word Necrosis in it so it must be somewhere.

It sure is not this file - which is dated March 2008 and made with a relatively old GZDoom version.

The console reports that "savedir" is an unknown console command.

Searching for .zds files reveals save games in my Hexen folder, and my Doom2 folder. None of the save files in the Doom2 folder are Necrosis; they're only Doom related mod saves.

I also noticed that depending on what mods I load in GZDoom, the load game list is completely different. Is that normal?

save_dir is ""

Unfortunately this report has apparently gone from Why is Necrosis crashing GZDoom, to Where is my Necrosis save file? Since I can't seem to find it, I think maybe I'll just try to make it happen again.

Someone in the Necrosis thread on the zdoom forums said levels 8 and 9 were prone to crashing a lot.

EDIT: Ok, I seem to be unable to crash Necrosis, and the crash I was getting from the save game is probably related to how it's apparently a DOM save file, and not Necrosis.
