[fixed]9.0.12. Shooting rockets *straight* up kills You?

Post by Paul »

Couple weeks ago I've noticed a strange phenomena involving me being killed when firing my decorated missiles up (they were only place holders to see how the new explosion effects I was developing act once spawned by a missile) so I tought it's not really important.

Only today, when playing Hacx I noticed a suspicious loss of health when tracking down the robots from below. Then I tested it with Doom. Indeed, firing a rocket straight (90 degree up) up will kill You/seriously damage You, no matter how far below of a high ceiling You are.

I redownloaded the latest 9.0.12 version.
The damn things still kill You, so I suppose it's time to report this well.. discovery.

EDIT: Also: I just love bugs that come out in development ;) do You?
EDIT:
I've taken my research on this further to report that the rockets aren't the end of this weirdness. All splash-damage weapons make this happen (tested with the Weaopns Resource Wad), damaing You about 4*the splash damage of the weapon (uncertain of the value here..)

The only exception is the Phoenix Rod of Heretic which appears to hurt You only at certain angles.. speaking of Heretic, try firing mace's explosive balls straight up or down. What You'll get, will be quite bizarre.
*I took a screenshot of balls fired up bouncing lightly to infinity and balls fired down bouncing ultra-fast.. infintely, but the screenshot refuses to show the hi-speed balls*

My question-what the heck is going on?

Although my conclusions were wrong.
This is the result of a truly stupid error in the explosion code - and fixed with adding a simple '-' in one place... (and reported to Randy as well. ;))

Another funny thing you can try with this bug is to fire a rocket straight up at a ceiling that's about 2000 or more units above you. Not only does it kill you, but it launches you all the way up to the ceiling, and your dead carcass will come creaming back down to the ground. It's like a mega jump after you're dead. Pretty cool. 8)

That is also an effect of the incorrect sign in the explosion distance calculation. The lower the distance to the center of the explosion the higher the damage. And a distance of -2000 is extremely low. ;)

Kinda like "implosion" no? ;) One of my mates told me once about the "5th dimension" being an inverted dimension of our own. Maybe we could use Gzdoom to some scientific experiments?

Ok, that was silly :)
