Initially the characters appear OK but then a black outline appears a tic or two later.

The menu thing doesn't seem to happen in normal use during a game, but it did over the bossback.

There's some problems with the wipes apparently. Crossfade seems to set a few things that don't get unset afterwards.

I couldn't reproduce the black border though.

Yes, it does seem specific to that wipe mode. I wouldn't have spotted it if it hadn't been for the discussion in the thread about the titlepic not being cleared at the start of the game and me changing to crossfade.

Crossfade should be ok with the next revision. Some change I made recently made the error here visible.

r528 does indeed seem to fix it.
