HEXEN CRASH

While playing Hexen with the latest version of GZDoom I have had multiple crashes/freezes and the console pops up with the message: "could not decompress CFILE". I did not experience this with older versions, and it also has happened consistently on two different computers, one running Windows 7 and the other running XP.

EDIT: It seems to be directly related to going through portals.

When GZDoom crashes, you normally get a crash report dialog window which lets you save the crash report as a zip somewhere on your computer.

Attach that zip to a post here.


The error message you speak of comes from a function used to decompress archives, as you could guess, and there is no reason for this to be called by Hexen normally.

This sounds like you somehow create broken savegames. How that can happen, no idea.

I think this is fixed now by the ZDoom r2685 fixes. Try a GZDoom r934 build or higher and report back.

The 'Line xx's right edge is unconnected' messages indicate that it ran into the same problem. Please retest with r943.

Huh. IIRC you said those lines were put there to affect the nodebuilder... Ironic that they'd come back to bite the renderer later. (Inderectly of course.)

No. The problem was that one function to create some intermediate data was outputting an error message for these lines. But since this function was called twice I added a check to skip the error message on the second run. Too bad that that check also skipped the code that ignored the line for further processing so it ran all through it for a line it shouldn't have done that and ended up writing into undefined memory. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it caused weird effects. Depends on the level how it manifested itself.

Oh, data. OK. Yes, I've gotten repeated crashes with Map40 (Dark Crucible), by the tme I was seeing them, this was already being worked on. :P

Now just waitin' on a build of r943. :)

With svn build r959 I no longer have this problem (at least in initial testing; I went back and forth through the troublesome portal dozens of times with no crashes).

My thanks to everyone who continues to work on solving bugs and making improvements!
