Every second I leave the mouse somewhere, the menu selector keeps jumping up to wherever the mouse is nearest. So if you wanted to use the keys, it would constantly keep instantly setting itself as close as possible to the mouse, making them almost useless.
Edit: Oooh, okay, so that's what the << stood for in the upper left corner... Okay, nevermind.

Options -> Mouse options -> Enable mouse in menus
Change to "no" or "touchscreen-like".
The << is a back button you can click on with the mouse, so that it plays the same role as the escape key. You can change that as well in the same option menu, it's "Show back button". If you have a 5-button mouse, you can also leave it off because you can use mouse-4 for that, like on your browser. (Though you can't use mouse-5 to go forward.)

This sounds like your mouse is constantly sending move events. Normally that should not happen. If you can't find any way to make it stop that your only choice is to use one of the other menu control modes.
