DRD Team will live on for now...

Post by Rachael »

BoldEnglishman has offered to help with the site's finances temporarily to help keep it running.

If you still wish to donate to help out, the donation page is still available here: http://drdteam.org/?p=donations

Also - thank you to AFADoomer for donating a year's worth of funds!

(For those historically curious, the old version of this post is stored as a note, you can click here to view it)Subject: End of the line soon for DRD Team...

As of January 31, 2011, DRD Team will serve its last day on the internet.

This comes as quite a regretful decision for me, but it was one that had to be made.

The fact is, I do not have the money to keep this site going. And it seems that I am not able to depend on others for help.

The only source of funding thus far for these latest months was Metalhead from Skulltag. But even she can't help all the time, and in the end, we decided that without the community's help, we can't keep this running forever.

Is this decision final? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on what happens from here. This is not a free resource, and it's costed me quite a lot thus far, but most of you have been getting it for free thanks to the kindness of others.

I'm sorry guys, I can't do this forever.

As they say, all good things come to an end. It's been a good run.

(P.S. the site itself may continue on with a shared host, but a lot of things - such as the File Sharing service, and SVN/FTP for all the hosted projects, will no longer exist)

(p.s. if you wish to send donations you may send them through this link here: http://drdteam.org/?p=donations - they will not be accepted until they guarantee at least another month of uptime, though, so you will get a refund if things don't pan out)[/note]

The window for the fundraising was not even 48 hours from the announcement?

The fund-raising topic was started on the 16th. It may not have been 48 hours, but it was not that far from there.

If people still want to help, they can, but from the looks of it, it's only delaying the inevitable. Unless someone can completely take it over financially, it's gone.

This is a real shame. I was digging in my piggy bank to see what I could afford donation-wise but, from what you say, it sounds like occasional community donations really aren't a sustainable way of keeping the site going anyway.

I want to say thank you for what you have done with DRD over the years. It is a valuable service and has been central to a number of projects and services that are very important to the community. It's a shame it has to go but I fully understand the reasons and the cost of running it is pretty significant for one person to bear.

A sad day. :(

Real shame indeed... I will definitely miss DRD. Will Obsidian be affected as well?

Yes, Obsidian is going too.

I am not interested in seeing DRD Team die, so I am going to see if there are any people willing to host some of its resources, even if I have to split the site up into pieces.

I am sorry that it came to this, I was going to try polling for donations, and did try for a few days, but ultimately, with absolutely no one stepping forward to help I pretty much decided in the end that I couldn't do it without someone offering to fully take it over - it's more than just relying on community donations, it's having a sustainable source of income, and that's one thing that will be missing for a while yet, unfortunately, as long as I remain the host. :(

Well - the site and the repositories will live on, for now. Thank you to BoldEnglishman for offering to help cover the costs! :)

@BoldEnglishman Thank you and well done sir.

What, if any, possibilities are there for a log term viable solution? Clearly donations have proven not to be practical, advertising hasn't raised enough revenue and expecting one person to fund it is simply unreasonable. Is there anything else that could be tried?
