I have moved it to the bugs forum but it is woefully inadequate as a bug report. Please read the following thread:
http://forum.drdteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=253
to find out what information is required. ("Latest version" is meaningless and your hardware specs are essential - i.e. read the guidelines linked to above.)
You are the only one who has access to the information needed for someone to look at your bug report properly. If you don't provide it, your problem cannot be addressed.

Re: black screen on latest version
I had the same issue but only when I attempted to change the resolution. The res changed (I have an fps counter in the top left that shrunk so I know) and the game was functioning fine (I could hear the menu sounds) but the screen was black.
I got around this by setting the res manually in the ini.
Using 2.0.04
g3258 cpu
650 ti boost gpu
4gb ram
1080p 16:9 monitor

Re: black screen on latest version
If you get that error you are using an old gzdoom.pk3 with the latest EXE. Please check if you only did a partial update.

Re: black screen on latest version
Not even 1.8.6?
Are you running any kind of monitor/video tweaking software?

my current machine isnt exactly fresh from the store shelf
and if i know anything about the previous owners, they wouldnt have any reason to use such things

Re: black screen on latest version
My friend has exactly the same problem as described above: black screen, only sounds. Menu is not visible at all. He gets an error message which says:
Run as normal user, Windows 7 64-bit, Nvidia Geforce GTX 680, Nvidia drivers 347.25.
GZDoom version 2.0.0.5.
However, I tested Linux version of GZDoom 2.0.0.4 (latest with the source code available) on my computer and had no issues at all: everything works perfectly fine.
:: Linux specs are ::
Arch Linux 64-bit
2 graphic cards due to Optimus technology:
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Drivers (64-bit): mesa-libgl 10.4.3-1
Drivers (32-bit): lib32-mesa-libgl 10.4.3-1
Nvidia GTX 760M
Drivers: Nvidia Linux drivers 343.22 (nvidia 343.22-5)
GZDoom tested with optirun parameter (bumblebee)
GZDoom works with both graphic cards on Linux.

Re: black screen on latest version
That error message suggests that gzdoom.pk3 is missing some content.
