[pre-1307] Fullscreen is faulty at my resolution

Post by Wiw »

I recently got a new video card and monitor. I could run GZDoom fine at fullscreen before. But now when I do it at my new monitor's resolution, it comes out all squashed and fuzzy! ZDoom doesn't do this, it runs fine, but GZDoom shows a complete mess! I... don't understand it. Running it in a window is fine, but I don't know if I want to keep doing that, I'd rather be fullscreen.

For reference -
Video Card: NVidia GeForce GTX 960
Monitor: Hanns-G HL205 (1600x900)

I've tried updating the drivers, to no avail. I'm enclosing my DXDiag report in the hope that this matter can be dealt with promptly.

This may be an issue with both nVidia and ATI.

Sometimes, in Direct3D, they respect your settings about your monitor's scaling settings (which is things that keep it at its native resolution even when running other resolutions, whether to scale to aspect ratio, etc). It seems like in OpenGL, for one reason or another, the card will change its resolution directly and expect the monitor to deal with it. This is a driver issue and I am not sure there is anything that can be done in GZDoom to fix it.

I do not know if Intel has that problem though because I have only ever personally seen Intel adapters on laptops and the built in display almost always handles anything just fine.

Yeah, it seems driver related. I cannot reproduce this issue here. Any resolution I try works properly.

Isn't there anything I can do to fix the issue?

Not much you can do, really. You might try and see if nVidia's technical support might help but I doubt they will have anything useful to say. You might just be stuck with the problem you have now.

Try what is suggested here. Set the desktop and GZDoom to the same resolution. If that isn't working there really isn't much you can do beyond that.

Have you set up your monitor with NVIDIA Control Panel, which is part of the NVIDIA driver installation?
For example:
Spoiler:
Reading the manual for your monitor informs me that the only included video cable is a VGA cable. Check the
integrity of the cable. Check the connector pins, they can bend easily, wiggle the connectors when plugged in, etc.

Better would be the use of a DVI cable.

Well... I had to use an adaptor to plug the VGA cable into one of the DVI sockets of my video card... you think that might be it?

Hello Wiw!

What IS the resolution you try to run GZDoom in?
And did you change any of Windows' settings like scaling the desktop or the like?

I run it at 1600x900, my monitor's native resolution. My desktop is set to that as well, but I haven't changed any other settings!

It might be of some help to actually SEE the issue you are having. Can you take a photo of how it looks on your monitor?

Did you run NVIDIA Control Panel? Did you try other resolutions/frequencies?
Since you are using the analog input (VGA), while GZDoom is running, did you try the autoadjust feature of your monitor?
I find it odd that the manual does not mention the DVI to VGA adaptor. They seem to make a distinct separation between VGA to VGA and DVI to DVI.

AS Graf Zahl mentioned, provide screenshots or photos.

I've figured it out! The video refresh rate wasn't set in the config file. So I set it to 60 and now the fullscreen works perfectly. Thanks anyway!
