GZdoom g2.1.0 is screwy on my computer.

Post by Mastrius0713 »

I have a Zotac Geforce 6100-Value system with AMD Athlon II X4 630 CPU, 3.75 Gigabytes RAM, NVidia Geforce GT 610, running Windows XP Pro version 2002 SP3.
My DXDiag file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g6h5b6qaihz9d ... c.txt?dl=0
I made a video of what happens here: https://youtu.be/ILMAeRWbnIc :blergh:

My other computer is a Compal El80 Laptop with Intel T2130 1.86GHz CPU, 2.0 Gigabytes RAM, NVidia Geforce Go 7600 running Windows XP Pro version 2002 SP3.
The DXDiag: https://www.dropbox.com/s/furfzc2wmdx04 ... l.txt?dl=0
When I tried to run it, it did this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ul897wle704im ... 3.png?dl=0

This is not a bug.

2 things:

1) Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. Honestly, I am surprised GZDoom still even runs on it.
2) GeForce 7600 is too old to run the GZDoom 2.x branch. It only supports OpenGL 2.0, so you will need to try the 1.x series. This is the link to 1.9.0 which is feature-comparable to 2.1.0 - and is net-compatible too. It should run fine on the laptop with no need to upgrade Windows.

As for the GT 610, if 1.9.0 works properly on it but 2.1.0 doesn't, it may be a bug with GZDoom in Windows XP. Also, try switching to Windowed mode (alt-enter).

I have never had problems with GZDoom 2.0.05, also, using Alt+Enter on the GT 610 just gives me a large blank window.

In addition to that, trying to run GZDoom 1.9.0 does this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/41mtfpboc9nxk ... r.PNG?dl=0

That looks like you try to run GZDoom 1.9 with the gzdoom.pk3 from 2.1. They are not compatible.

About the 610, this looks like something outside GZDoom is setting the GL render context to a window it's not supposed to. I have no idea what could do that.

Okay, I switched the GZDoom.pk3 file but 1.9.0 is still acting like 2.1.0 did before. The little screen at the top left corner.
My laptop is able to run 1.9.0 but it does a similar thing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qy1v8izvlgaye ... p.PNG?dl=0
So I have no idea. :bfg:

I think your version of Windows might just be too old, sorry.

If you have a little space on your drive, you can try out new versions of Windows for free - Microsoft allows you to use trial versions of fully functional versions with very little restriction for 90 days. You just need software that will create a dedicated partition for it so that you do not overwrite your old Windows install. I would not suggest using these as an upgrade (in fact I think that's disabled for trials) until you get a legit key - and a Home or Pro key will work just fine.

The reason why I suggest this is there's no reason your hardware can't run it - but I know Graf has been upgrading his compiler over the years and as he keeps using different ones, and as they upgrade they silently drop support for earlier versions of Windows. Frankly, I am surprised GZDoom even ran on Windows XP.

Since only Windows 8.1 and 10 is listed, I would also suggest getting Classic Shell - this will give you back an actual start menu, one that you can even customize to be a little more like Windows XP if you want.

I would not suggest trying this on your laptop; at least not right away - only the newer computer with the 3GB of RAM. As much press as Windows 8 gets for being lean and efficient, it's still a slog compared to XP.

I don't think it'S XP. Even Visual Studio 2015 still supports it and the 2013 build has been confirmed to run.

It looks like the desktop has been set for a high DPI interface where UI elements are scaled. OpenGL does not like this because it gets incorrect window information.
On modern systems this can be changed on the compatibility tab for an application, but I have no idea if XP has this.

As far as I can tell, Windows XP does not have a DPI setting on the compatibility tab.

There is a DPI setting in Windows in the General tab under Advanced. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hba8fro6sv612 ... s.PNG?dl=0

Here is an oddity. 1.9.0 on the Compal was actually viewable in a window when I pressed ALT+Enter It also started up normal in Window mode. https://www.dropbox.com/s/pamg2oc5zqlry ... w.PNG?dl=0

When I pressed Alt+Enter again, it became a normal fullscreen image. It did not stay this way after a restart and I had to do it again to get a normal image each time I started it.

Meanwhile, 2.1.0 still gives the same R_OpenGL error and then quits.

On the Zotac, 1.9.0 does the same thing.

When I press ALT+Enter in 2.1.0 however, it gives me a blank window. https://www.dropbox.com/s/21w5w02hal1jy ... k.PNG?dl=0

When I press ALT+Enter again the whole screen is blank.

If I start 2.1.0 in a window it gives me a normal picture. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rpnrmtd8no0sd ... w.PNG?dl=0

But when I go into fullscreen, it goes blank again.

I don't know if any of this helps but I just thought I would point this out.

That sounds like a problem with your display's plug&play settings. When going fullscreen GZDoom tries to get the best display refresh rate, but that seems to fail on your display.

You can try entering "vid_refreshrate 60" in the console before switching to fullscreen.

On the Geforce 7600 you won't be able to run GZDoom 2.x. That card only supports OpenGL 2.1, which is too low for GZDoom 2.x, that's what the 1.9 version is there for.

I tried vid_refreshrate 60 but it doesn't seem to do anything. 2.1.0 still goes into a blank screen when I go to fullscreen. 1.9.0 is the same as before.
