[driver settings][9.19] Graphical Insanity

Post by Zeg-Vok »

I've been getting this kind of crazy Titlepic since I started using GZDoom, but ever since the last 2 releases, it was never this bad. Also, on certain Wads, the textures and flats get all screwed up, along with some of the sprites (Some will be drawn fine, but then say 1 out of 4 frams will be a garbled mess). I went into the OpenGL settings menu and changed the Antistropic filtering, and it fixes it, no matter what its set on, then once I reload GZDoom, its back to being garbled. Also, with the latest versions, Every time GZDoom crashes (Which is frequently, usually due to shoddy DECORATE coding on my part), it sets my computer's own brightness really high. Even after I start GZDoom up whether it had crashed or was closed normally, Its always really dark, and I have to change the Gamm level to get it to display brightness and darkness correctly.

My System:

AMD AthalonXP 2800
ATI Raedeon 9800SE 128 (Sapphire), drivers Version 6.14.0010.6575
Windows XP SP2
Mobo VIA KT400-8235
1 Gig of Ram

The only thing I can imagine to create such a garbled image is that the graphics driver for some reason discards the memory used by the title pic's texture. Unfortunately I have no control over such misbehavior and can't detect ir. For GZDoom the texture appears to be valid. When you change the anisotropic filter you are performing a compete texture reset so the corrupt texture gets flushed. After that it's ok.

The gamma problem you are having is a result of your crashes. In some circumstances the game apparently fails to reset the system's gamma to its defaults. I can't say whether this is a driver problem or something else. For me it doesn't happen though.

PS. Do I need to say again that ATi's GL support is pure shit? :?

I got the EXACT same thing when I started using jDoom a while back with an ATI chipset.

My fix: Make sure your graphics card driver has the most up-to-date driver, and check to see that OpenGL is properly installed (how im not sure, thats just IMO).

this same thing happened to me and I simply changed the 3D "Standard Settings" (in Catalyst Control Center) to "Quality" instead of "Performance". fixed it for me :)

It's not the "ATI is shit" reason.. I don't understand how people not want to use at LEAST Quality settings on any decent graphics card is beyond me. Then again, some people "think" more blur is good..

Perhaps people dont want to take the slider off of "Application Selection"

also, "Performance" is apparently the default, and apparently gets set back to that every freaking time I update my drivers, and I don't usually remember to go in there and set it to Quality again :P

Thanks for the information. It's not the first issue to be encountered with 'performance' settings. Apparently the drivers are taking shortcuts when it is active. But the one here looks a bit extreme...

That may be true.. but if you care about the graphics of ANY game.. you'd go and fix that.

Application selection is usually the BEST option for games that have their own AA/aniso selections and is recommended by both ATI and NVidia to use simply because it can be detrimental to performance. The slider is there for older games that do not have internal AA/aniso selection (really old games).

The key slider really is the Mip-Map Slider... it should always be at "High Quality" or "furthest to the right".

I'm not saying I wouldn't do that, I'm just saying I usually forget. I just don't think of it. Until I get the bugout graphics in GZDoom, that's my reminder.. :P
