I don't use the desktop much, I tend to dump everything into QuickLaunch or the start menu somewhere. Hell I rarely ever actually see my wallpaper, some fullscreen window is in the way.

I love the simple-and-clean approach
The main image is this one from the NASA Mars Exploration Rovers image gallery trimmed to fit. It is just AWESOME that we can send robots half a billion miles across space and take photos of the horizon on the surface of another planet -- there was even one of Earth as seen in the night sky and another of sunset on Mars! Ultra cool

It's OpenGL accelerated composite window manager for X (more info on http://www.beryl-project.org).
BTW There is a plenty of videos showing it in action on YouTube.
