Tutorial Section on our Forum?!

Post by ellmo »

Even though Doom is 12 years old, there's still a lot to learn about. Especially when it comes to still evolving source ports like GZDoom.
I think we should have a section on our forum that would keep tutorials describing how to do various, less-basic stuff.

Things like using an editor to make Doom engine maps or how to handle lump managements are also okay, but I'm now thinking about tutorials on modelling for GZDoom (I'll soon get the hang of this and post something), drawing sprites and textures (if for example NMN invents a new technique or something) and applying special effects (like those Solarsnowfall has been showing all the time).

So what do you think Grubber? I't not going to be a waste of space.

Well we have two Wiki's for that. The Doom and Zdoom wiki.

Neither of these has GZDoom specific specials, and tutorials to draw sprites/textures.
...and they don't have tutorials, Mike.

If any of the hostees want to start something like tutorials section, it's ok. But there won't be anything like that in the general forum.
EDIT: maybe the time has come for wiki.drdteam.org?

EDIT: Who the f**k edited this post? You can't quote or what? I'm looking at you, ellmo!

I was planning to ask you about setting up a wiki for the Armory, so I guess the Armory stuff could be added as a section of the DRD wiki. I'm all for it, personally.

Why not? You just gave a secret forum to another project by Tormentor, I think we would really make a good usage of a common forum space that is dedicated to something very useful. On top of that - the purpose is very accurate.
And I'm not talking about wiki-type page that only has documentation. People who have little experience will not learn much from it anyway. What we need is expamples, screens and step-by-step tutorials.

I've seen hundreds of posts in various Doom forums with subjects: Where can I get decent tutorials or Please help with [...], I'm noob. I think there are many people willing to help less experienced Doomers.

@ellmo: Is it big problem to have a special space for it? And why do you think that wiki = documentation only?

I have my own idea how drdteam.org should evolve, and unfortunatelly your idea collides with it.

I agree with Grubber because he is paying for the service, therefor having the ultimate right to do whatever he wishes with the DRDTeam domain.

@NMN: Well why do you agree with both of us?

@Grubber: but is it a big problem for you to create a new section in our forums? I don't want to argue with you anymore seeing how overwhelming your argument is; I just want to know. And I just want to know why you didn't have any problems giving a secret section for Tormentor667? Why is it that a project yet-to-be born deserves a forum and something as helpful as tutorials do not...?

EDIT: @ Grubber: it's possible I editted your previous message by accident, my browser broke down and I recall doing something strange to have it recoevered. If it's my fault - and probably is - I'm terribly sorry. I'll watch my fingers next time :)

I agree it's a good idea, but Grubber is the boss here, so if he says no, then I agree with him.

That's a typical misconception. There's a difference between agree and obey. You cannot agree with two opposite options.

Then I agree with Grubber. I'm out of this discussion. Whatever.

This confuses me. What exactly are you planning? Another wadsinprogess type site, with more focus on teamwork? An "everything else" community, a community of people who don't "fit" anywhere else in the Doom community?

What's the big deal?

I don't see a tutorials section fitting in a forum. It would work much better as a wiki, but why not use ZD's wiki? It's already there...
