Need option to turn off "Paper Sprites"
I've mentioned this before, the flatness of the sprites while in GL mode makes the game look like crap. When you strai straight up, you cant even see your projectiles anymore, or the monsters ontop of you. There is a definitely need to correct this or expand the functions of GL mode into software, despite that you "Graf" said you wont touch software mode. The "Paper-ness" of the GL render style greatly undermines the awesome port and a good level when you cant see who is shotting at you or where the stuff is coming from when the monsters is almost directly on top. Also, it simply looks awful.

All you can do is to tilt and shift the 'paper' in a different direction. But it's still a 2-dimensional image and nothing you can do will hide this. In fact, many methods to deal with this look even worse. The only reason the software mode is less sensitive to this is that it doesn't support real view pitching.

Hm...odd. Since a lot of other games seems to do the sprites fine. These are'd doom games, but Quake sprites aren't turned into paper (noticed in Hexen 2), and as far as i know, all newer games (HL, CS, so forth) don't turn their sprites into paper.Graf Zahl wrote:All you can do is to tilt and shift the 'paper' in a different direction. I dont see a problem with the sprites always facing the player. That's how doom is after all. It;s a lot better than having flat enemies, IMO.Graf Zahl wrote:Quake doesn't have sprites and Half-Life's sprites always face the player. Have you ever seen a tree with that option. Yuck squared! I can't say much about Hexen 2 but most likely it's the same as HL.

I prefer the sprites the way they are now. Doom wasn't designed for having mouselook at all, let alone being able to look straight up or down. It rarely occurs that I'm even looking in such an extreme angle for this to even be a problem. On the other hand, having the sprites aligned to the camera is far more annoying for anything but projectiles.
This was probably the first thing I noticed when I moved to GZdoom, and now I can't imagine having it any other way. Then again, some people play with rocekt trails and all those texture filters on. Wouldn't hurt to have it as an option, JDoom does this (unless I remember it wrong).
