HOw ever unrealistic it loks and however gly, it's not as ugly as not seeing them at all. My guess is that most people rather look at a an ugly sprite than not being able to see it. Unless GZdoom expects people to start all useing 3d models and making own modens whenever they want to mod, it think that player-facing sprites is a good idea. I'm sure taking the Sprite clipping off (with always sprite clp adjustment) would make it looks just like the original doom sprites.
That or 3d floors and all other features be transfered to software mode, which doesn't allow all the extreme angles. Something you said you wont do.

True, it is "more reaslitic". However, this is an option to turn it off for people that don't like it. It's not like it's going to take the anchoring off permanently. Atleast make the missiles face you. I'm sorry but, Flat missiles look like crap. I doubt that people will be making a 3d model for every decorate monster, missiles, object, whatever they want to use.

There's always voxel support, but that feature request appears to be an automatic [no] in Graf's case because as he pointed out in a specific DW thread, voxels are a pain to render.

Voxels looks wierd cause it makes the thing look like legos. I dont think it's a good idea. Esepcially in rooud, shiny objects, the voxels makes it lose it's roundness. The HavoX wrote:There's always voxel support, but that feature request appears to be an automatic [no] in Graf's case because as he pointed out in a specific DW thread, voxels are a pain to render.

Eriance, like you, I have requested this feature butt plenty of times.
I've explained, time and again, that, it looks u-g-l-y.
For example, the particle effects that solarsnowfall simply looks like utter crap from extreme up/down angles.
And then there's the problem with the projectiles appearing flat (sometimes disappear completely), as well as the monsters.
I have suggested to Graf that if he doesn't like the sprite to face the player completely, then at least reducing the amount of shearing would be fine.
I understand where he's coming from; I've seen how terrible it looks in ZDoomGL, especially with the Spider Mastermind.
But totally paper thin? That's ridiculous.
At least add it as an OPTION Graf, so that people who dislike the current behaviour (me, Eriance, etc) can turn it on and off.
The way I think right now is, if I want to mod for GZDoom and I want to add new monsters, I don't want them to be sprites, but models. Because I simply can't stand the paper cutout look.

I cannot start ZDoomGL on my system, but really it looks ugly for sprites with SOLID flag (obstacles, light sources except candle, decorations, alive monsters) in cases when they are too high or located near to walls. But for all others sprites (keys, ammunitions, weapons, powerups, dead monsters) it looks good. You can see it with my test version of prboom.Nash wrote:I understand where he's coming from; I've seen how terrible it looks in ZDoomGL, especially with the Spider Mastermind.

I suggestion he add two features that can correct both the paper sprites and the the player-facing sprites issues. First, Have an option to turn it off. Second, have an option that reduced the camera pitching allowed, as in software mode. This would prevent the ugliness from both render styles, rather than it's paper sprites or player-facing sprites.

I'd like to see an option for this. In fact, I believe this is one of the only things I've suggested. The best way to handle it would have a cvar or an option. Say, there are four settings: original - which is how sprites behave now, limited - where only non monster sprites are no longer sheared, small - everything is affected but there is still a small amount of shearing, and none - sprites always face the player. Alternatively, Graf could implement vertical sprite rotations. ;)
