GZDoom doesn't like my computer :(

Post by Electronic Samurai »

Someone recommended that I repost this topic here from Zdoom.

I've just installed GZDoom to see what all the buzz is about. To be on the safe side, I back up my .ini files created by Zdoom and move them to another folder (hey, I can reset my controller config later). Upon clicking on the GZDoom icon, though, I get a large black box sitting in the upper-right corner of my screen. It continues to sit there.

OK.

So, I alt-f4 out of that, and try again. To my surprise, Doom shows up a moment later - in greens and purples, and there seems to be two of them in the upper half of the screen - one on the left, one on the right. Figuring this to be a video problem, I go to "video settings" and play around with what I find there, to increasingly odd results. Changing the renderer to anything but "OpenGL" freezes the program entirely.

Also, it seems my default screen settings have been changed, as well - the brightness of the screen is set very high and everything looks washed-out. I suspect that OpenGL rendering is causing my computer to have a panic attack.

I'm using a "RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2X" graphics card. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Uhh... What's wrong is that your graphics card is ancient. It only has 4 or 8 MB of memory and definitely doesn't implement all of the OpenGL functionality that GZDoom requires.

If you intend to run GZDoom (and in fact any newer OpenGL games) you have no other options but to upgrade.

A budget gaming rig (2.0 GHz and above, 512 MB RAM, and a basic 128/256 MB graphics card) is very afordable these days.
