If saving the game fails for any reason, GZDoom hangs, leaving the save file empty.
It happened on Z1M8 of KDiZD, a very large and very detailed map, but I've been unable to reproduce it since, even on Deus Vult. So more likely it tried to access the hard drive at a very bad time.

Yeah, well, then maybe is more a system specific problem. That same problem happened (as mentioned in the above posts) in KDIZD; in Z1M1 everytime I saved at certain specific point of the level. I had to play KDIZD under zdoom to be able to finish it. But I only see 2 post about that problem here, so seems like is a very specific problem. Too bad.

This might be a different problem, but it appears to be releated. I was playing UTNT and I saved my game near the flaming tower. However, instead of hanging, the game crashed with a report. The savegame file didn't work afterwards. Here is the report (1.0.29):
