99.9999% of the time they work. However, once in a while they cause GZdoom to really slow down - like it's trying to do something repeatedly and giving over all its calculating power to whatever that task is. It feels very much like the kind of treacle-slow behaviour I was getting in early versions of GZdoom when picking up a dehacked armour item.
It doesn't crash, so no crash log. The best I can do is describe the typical way in which it manifests. Select the flare and hit enter. Most of the time, you'll hear the item use noise, see the flare fly through the air and hit something. You'll hear the death sound for the flare and then watch the pretty glow.
However, when it is going wrong, with no warning and no obvious way to make it more likely that I have found, you will hear the using sound. You will not see (or at least not notice) the item fly through the air, but you will hear it break. From that point on, you are stuck in this incredibly slow situation. The only option is to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill GZDoom. I have no idea if this is actually what is going on, but it feels almost as if the flare is somehow activating inside the player (because you don't see it fly, but do hear it break/die). Or maybe the slowness just kicks in as soon as you launch the flare and that's why you don't see it.
