Creation of a new subforum: Tricks & Help

Post by Jive »

I suggest the creation of a new section of the forum, as fifth part of the upper section: Subforums, dedicated to "Tricks & help".

This section could receive our discovery(ies), our trick(s) and what we've found to solve a difficulty or to obtain something unusual or unexpected.

I thought that my message about the codes to put in the autoexec.cfg file could be moved and become one of the messages for such a new forum.
But there are surely other messages that would be welcome there?

The idea is to create a sort of bank for good (or bad) ideas, to share those ideas with the community, and also to centralize the already posted tricks.

I think that this forum is a good idea, though I fear that it might not turn out too well (particularly not to Graf, because from my experience he doesn't really like "hacks" like reloading in Decorate).

The problem with hacks is always that they abuse engine behavior in an unforeseen manner so they can easily break by internal changes. Just remember the ZDoom community map with its DEHSUPP lump. We had to wait until now to fix it because doing it right requires 2.1.0's DECORATE features (.96x doesn't cause because it's unofficial.)

Then, of course, people (and I've done it too) complain because their mod no longer works with newer versions even though the mod relied on an unsupported or unsuitably used feature or even bug and want a "compat option" to "fix" it.

It's very easy to "fix" this problem:
Graf will have only to add a "Supported" stick before the messages, or "Unsupported" for hacks that may be a source of difficulties.

chopkinsca gave a solution to fix a bug with Doom Builder, here:
http://forum.drdteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=16121#16121
I found it by hazard. If this solution had been in the section that I suggest, everyone could benefit from it, instead of finding itself drowned in a flood of messages and thus, not to be known!!!

But... It was just an idea. I like to centralize information, to sort them and to share them so that everyone can profit from them, instead of remaining to rot in a corner and to be used for nothing, or not large thing. And this forum, insofar as it is a under-forum, not having a true structure, is a "bric à brac" that it would be perhaps wise to order, as far as possible.
Understand me well: I do not come there to criticize, but give ideas and to try to be useful.
I hate to be somewhere and to take without anything to give in my turn…
The fact that I'm the principal administrator of a french forum is surely for something in my vision.

Graf, don't be frightened: I don't come to raise difficulties to you, to give you orders or to want to impose anything, but to share and help, and also to take, of course (I have pretty everything to learn about GZDoom).
I hope that it is well as that which you perceive me.

Unfortunately that wouldn't work. Witness how many times Graf said "don't do that" when referring to DEHSUPP weapons over at the Zdoom forum, yet DEHSUPP weapons kept appearing, got broken with a change to Zdoom and then people complained. Although, I have to confess, it was fun to mess with for a while - even though it was always likely to have a short lifespan.

In case you don't know, the DEHSUPP lump from Zdoom.wad/pk3 can be changed to allow a dehacked patch to access items from Heretic/Hexen/Strife. However, doing so was never supported and a change to the system could potentially break any mods that relied on it - which is exactly what happened.

A help subforum could organise a ton of threads in the Gzdoom forum, but I don't think it's really nessecory.
