[Driver issue]ATI Fog problems (formerly: Blinking lights.)

Post by solarsnowfall »

Just playing through Doom2.wad, I notice lights in some sectors tend to blink in a regular pattern. For instance, starting Map01, looking in at the room with the pillars and staircase, at certain angles, the light "blinks" to a brighter level then back again, with a regular occurance. There are no light related sector tags or specials assigned to theese sectors.

ATI. Of course. I had another report with the same problem and it was also an ATI card. It seems the depth fog implementation is somewhat broken on some ATI cards or drivers. Maybe you can do something in the driver settings about it?

ahh, so I'm not the only one. I've frigged around with my settings to no avail and updated to the latest drivers which also has not helped

Just to confirm my suspicion, could you load a map with real fog (like LTSD E4M3 or Herian2 Map19) and look what it is doing there?

Other than adjusting the performance settings of the card, I wouldn't know what else to change. The drivers are up to date, and this thing can handle just about anything I throw at it with no problems...

EDIT: Oops, I was late with that post, I'll look for theese maps in the archives

I'm not finding the files, if you want me to test run them, can you tell me where I can download them?

Ok, I ran the wad, and I get the same thing. It crashes on e1m4 during a scripted sequence, and I can't look at the level.

I played LTSD E4M3 and a lot of the time it looked ok but other times it would flicker like this:

That bug should be fixed in the next version. It's the same as the Void crashes mentioned elsewhere.

About the fog, that really sucks. ATI seems to have problems with proper handling of depth fog. It's too bad that I don't have any system to test it with myself.

What I'd like to know now is whether other ATI users are having the same problem. It can't really be that everyone else is using NVidia cards, right?

I'm confused. Is it that every sector has fog set to 0, or something? When I say sectors blink, there's no visible fog in them. Is this just a case me not knowing WTF I'm talking about here?
