I'll just quote myself from the ZDoom forum...

When using the Alternative HUD option (Options > Display Options) in Strife, there is no way to access the messages window. The keys and weapons windows don't work either, but they are negated by the useful nature of this HUD.

It would be nice if the message key worked in the alternative HUD, or a small area (a window perhaps) dedicated in the alternative HUD that showed the message (which perhaps could be toggled on and off).
